What Rough Jadeite Looks Like: Appearance, Treatments and Checks

Rough jadeite and polished jewelry can look very different. When comparing them, keep three questions separate: appearance, treatment status, and the information available for a specific item.

What the Surface Can Tell You

A rough piece may retain a weathered surface; cutting and polishing can make its internal appearance easier to see. A surface photograph or backlit video cannot independently establish the quality throughout a stone, its origin or its treatment history. An illustration in an article is not an identification report for a product.

Color and Transparency

Jadeite occurs in more than green, including lavender, yellow, red and white. Consider color alongside transparency and texture, and compare the actual listing’s photographs. Bright color or strong translucency does not by itself establish treatment status. See GIA’s jadeite quality guide.

A, B and C Describe Treatment

In the trade terminology explained by GIA, Type A is natural jadeite, including conventional waxing; Type B is acid bleached and polymer filled; Type C is dyed. These terms are not quality grades. Our natural and treated jadeite guide explains the distinction.

What to Check Before Ordering

Start with the exact material disclosed by the seller, then review treatment information, measurements, photographs and availability. If a report is listed, check its issuer, number and item details through the laboratory’s official service. Do not assume a report is included when the listing does not say so.

Appearance and home tests are not a substitute for laboratory testing. Do not strike, scratch or heat a piece to try to identify it. GIA’s research on bleached and polymer-impregnated jadeite explains why appropriate testing is needed to identify polymer filling.

Return to the Individual Listing

Our jadeite cabochon ring page provides information for that item. The store also carries anime designs in other materials, including serpentine jade; jadeite treatment labels do not apply to every product. Contact us before ordering when an unanswered question affects your choice.
