It cannot establish the material, treatment, geographic origin or value of the whole object. Keep the surface intact and direct the unanswered question to an appropriate gemological examination.

This guide explains that limit and gives you a short request to take to a gemologist or laboratory. It is useful for a piece you already own; buying another pendant or a home testing kit is not part of the method.

Why hardness cannot establish jade identity

GIA explains Mohs hardness as a comparison of resistance to scratching. Its jade care guide gives jadeite a range of 6.5–7 and nephrite 6–6.5. The scale is a relative comparison, with uneven steps; those figures are not authenticity scores.

A simple counterexample shows the problem. GIA identifies amethyst as a quartz variety and lists its hardness as 7. Jadeite’s published range overlaps that number. Our inference from these values is limited but useful: a hardness result around 7 cannot uniquely identify jadeite, because another material also reaches 7. No objects were scratched for this comparison.

A demonstration in which one object marks another gives, at most, an observation about the two tested surfaces. It does not name the mineral in a finished carving or supply a treatment finding. Keep that observation separate from a report on the actual item. The numerical ranges above concern jadeite and nephrite, not every material sold with a broad jade trade name.

Toughness is a different property

The same GIA guide describes jadeite and nephrite as exceptionally tough while still advising care against scratches. Resistance to scratching and resistance to breaking or chipping describe different kinds of damage. A stone can perform well in one respect and still be vulnerable in another.

Do not turn toughness into a tapping, dropping or impact experiment. GIA also notes that torch heat can harm jade and that warm acids can affect it. Keep deliberate heat, acid and impact demonstrations out of this process.

Two laboratory cases show what a quick test leaves open

In a 2014 Gems & Gemology case, a light-green bangle submitted as possible jadeite was identified as aventurine quartz. The laboratory used refractive index, specific gravity and inclusions to establish the material, with FTIR and Raman examination also applied. FTIR revealed polymer impregnation. This was a documented examination of one bangle, not a photograph-only identification rule.

In a 2016 study of two jadeite samples, both samples were inert to long-wave and short-wave UV fluorescence, yet additional imaging and FTIR/Raman analysis established impregnation. The important lesson is the separate question being answered: identifying jadeite did not settle whether it had been treated. These two samples do not establish the treatment of any JADE ALL DAY item.

Neither case supplies a home testing recipe. They illustrate why a laboratory chooses and interprets several observations for a particular object. Color, a scratch comparison and one UV reaction should not silently expand into conclusions about every property of a carving.

A better next step: preserve, define, ask

1. Preserve the object and its history

Keep identifying photographs, the listing or receipt, any report and the date. If you already made a mark, record where it is and how it happened. Photograph it as found rather than enlarging, polishing or chemically treating it for a clearer result. A mark in a photograph is an observation to explain to the examiner; this guide does not diagnose it as a scratch, a crack or a surface deposit.

2. Name the question that affects your decision

Do you need to know the material, whether a treatment is detectable, or whether an existing report belongs to this object? Write the question explicitly. A request for identification and a request for monetary valuation have different purposes. If your concern is an existing document, our report record, item and scope checklist covers that separate task.

3. Ask what examination suits the complete piece

Tell the examiner whether the stone is loose, carved or mounted, and describe attached metal, beads or cord. Ask what the examination can answer, what it will cost and whether any marking, sampling or removal would be required. Have that conversation before agreeing to a procedure. Do not dismantle a setting simply to imitate a loose-stone tutorial.

A short identification request you can copy

I have a jade-labeled [pendant, carving or bangle]. I want to establish [material and/or treatment], rather than obtain an appraisal. It is [loose or mounted], with [existing marks or other observations]. What examination is appropriate, what can it answer, and would any marking, sampling or removal be required?

Add your item photographs and any existing report. This is an editorial communication aid, not a laboratory protocol or a guarantee that every question can be resolved. Keep any conclusion attached to the examined item and its stated scope.

You can leave a question unresolved

If you simply enjoy an object as a decoration and its mineral identity does not affect a decision, you may choose to keep it labeled “material unverified” and decline further testing. If documented jadeite or a treatment finding is essential to a purchase, obtain suitable evidence before committing; an offer to perform a scratch demonstration does not close that gap. Our material-name guide helps you read seller wording without filling in missing findings.

For care, follow instructions appropriate to the identified material, its attachments and present condition. Our jade care guide is written for natural jadeite set in S925 silver; it is not a general treatment for an unidentified object. Identification, cleaning and valuation remain separate decisions.

Sources, photograph and scope

Sources checked 30 October 2026. Published by JADE ALL DAY, a jewelry retailer.
